Spay Day at El Valle De Urraca, 9 May 2010

Spay/Panamá and the excellent volunteers of Los Angeles de los Animales realized yet another spay/neutering day. This one is the last one of a successful series organized by the Health Ministry as part of the preventive medicine campaign.

Kids waiting for their puppies turn.

Left: weighing. Right: preparation for the operation and a tattoo.

62 dogs and 10 cats were sterilized in El Valle De Urraca.
In total 687 animals have been sterilized with the coordination of the Regional Office of San Miguelito.

Left: every operation gets noted. Middle: instruments sterilization. Right: all animals were dewormed and injected with vitamins. All dogs over 3 months of age received a vaccine against rabies.

Taxis! The animals are transported from the preparation area, to the operation room, and from there they are brought to the after care station, and finally they go to where they will come out of the anesthesia.

Left: A dog amongst cats, and a cat amongst dogs – who says they can’t get along?
Right: All animals had their ears cleaned, and were sprayed for fleas and ticks before waking up.

This unfortunate dog is infested with ticks. It received an injection against parasites and was thoroughly sprayed with liquid against fleas and ticks. We’ve also put anti-tick and earmite in his ears.  We couldn’t remove the ticks as it would bleed too much. Notice the white gum in the picture on the left.

The Spay Panama team was represented through veterinarians: Dra. Raquel Fuster, Dra. Letty de Guajardo, Dra. Gloria Fonseca, and the following assistants: Los Angeles de los Animales, Ernesto and Ginny from Universidad de Panama, Ronald, Alberto, Marlen, Rebeca, Daniel, Sol, Sandra, Sylvie and Pat.

A total of $8.55 was collected or the equivalent of 12 cents per animal. Help us to put a stop to the overpopulation of cats and dogs, which causes a large number of animals to roam homeless, hungry and sick by clicking here.
