IT IS FALSE THAT YOU CAN BE INFECTED BY PETTING YOUR CAT.

The best prevention is CLEANLINESS -- wash your hands.  Especially if you are pregnant.  It was also explained that cats play an important role in the balance of nature by keeping the number of rats and insects in check.
